Sefer Ha-Bahir
Section 1 verse 1
“Rabbi Nehuniah ben HaKana said: One verse (Job 37:21) states, "And now they do not see light, it is brilliant (Bahir) in the skies…[round about God in terrible majesty]." Another verse, however, (Psalm 18:12), states, "He made darkness His hiding place." It is also written (Psalm 97:2), "Cloud and gloom surround Him." This is an apparent contradiction. A third verse comes and reconciles the two. It is written (Psalm 139:12), "Even darkness is not dark to You. Night shines like day -- light and darkness are the same."
My Comments:
The message of the first verse of the Bahir is in the essence of Divinity called “Light” and the nature of the Light as an inexplicable phenomena which transcends all restrictions and conceptions. Due to the all-pervasive and omnipotence of the Light the potential for existence was in fact non-existent. Light in this regards is not the light of our own physical reality. The Light of Infinity was Every-thing and yet No-Thing. The Bahir quotes from Ps. 18:12 which states that this Light made Darkness its hiding place meaning the Light hid itself or concealed its Essence so as to create a void within non-existence wherein the pervasiveness of the Light would be constrained so as to not eclipse the darkness. The darkness being the conception of space where finite could have its own perceived existence separate from the Light. A verse from Ps. 139:12 is brought down to explain that Light and Darkness are the same and the existence of the Darkness does not contradict the essence of the Light. The Darkness is a concealing or “hiding place” of the Light but it is illusory and one must not conceive of Light and Darkness as a polarization or separation in a genuine sense as all is simply the illusion of the concealment of Light- a concealment wherein the presence of said Light is still present but beyond perception. The perception of the primordial Essence of Light would nullify the conception of the Creator (i.e. the creature) to have any ability to exist in any meaningful way.
